Disillusioned young cellist Maria returns to the village in the Alps where she was born to attend her brother’s funeral. This small and isolated community clings to its own ancient dialect (Cimbric). As with villages the world over, economic pressures are forcing the young people out, and its future looks bleak. But Maria, almost reluctantly, becomes re-integrated into the community when she is persuaded to help conduct the award-winning local choir, even if its own glory days are long ago. She accepts the challenge, and in the process falls back in love with the possibilities of music again.
