With a nod to Kenneth Anger’s notorious Hollywood Babylon, Cinecittà Babilonia takes the lid off the early history of Italy’s famous film studio. Created by Mussolini in the late 1930s, Cinecitta was supposed to drive homegrown Italian production to rival Hollywood domination. That directive became even more imperative when war broke out. Marco Spagnoli’s documentary is especially fascinated by the plight of the studio’s goddesses, stars like Carla Del Poggio, Maria Denis, Isa Miranda, Luisa Ferida, Clara Calamai and Alida Valli as they sought or fought off the favours of their fascist overlords. It’s part feminist critique, part historical chronicle, part sleazy muckraker, and all revelatory.
