"By grounding the whole film in a gritty reality, and basing the film's humor on deadpan absurdity rather than slapstick, They Call Me Jeeg becomes something I've never seen before. The closest thing to it would be M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable, but Gabriele Mainetti's film is simultaneously sadder and funnier, and forms an even more playful look at the standard superhero story." Ard Vijn, Screen Anarchy

The surprise winner at the Italian Oscars this year was this Roman superhero movie, a runaway popular smash about Enzo, a small time crook who picks up superhuman powers from toxic waste in the Tiber. At first he uses his strength to wreak havoc, walking off with an entire ATM for example, but a grudge match with a local badass, Fabio (the amazing Luca Marinell) brings out the best in Enzo, and a new hero is born…

Winner: 7 Davids (Italian Oscars) including Best New Director, Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Producer.
