In our modern age a fascination with monarchy endures. The queen is both a political symbol, an historical symbol and an archetype, as quoted by the psychologist Carl Jung; an icon embodying a certain unquantifiable feminine authority inhabited by a woman. Nowhere is female power so evident as in a portrait. Well before our modern age of photography and video, historic queens knew that their image was their currency, literally. Queenly images were stamped on coinage, painted on wood and canvas, and even in times of royal weddings enameled on cookie tins, china tea cups, and dish towels. Roz Marshall celebrates historic queens. Referencing some of the most famous ones in history painted by Holbein, Botticelli, Giorgione and others Marshall questions the essence of royal portraits, where colour, gilding, the show of wealth and resplendent jewels are essential elements in the art of self fashioning. If clothing makes the man, then Marshall reveals, it is extremes in ostentatious display that makes a queen.
