Is Public Art Impervious to Time and Tide?

Thursday Feb 10, 2022

Moderator: Dr. Angela Clarke, Director and Museum Curator, Italian Cultural Centre Gallery

Panelists: Aaron Nelson Moody (Sculptor and Jeweller), Dr. Ruth Beer (Sculptor, Emily Carr University Head of Dept of Sculpture), Barrie Mowatt (CEO Vancouver Biennale), Beth Alber (Jeweller, OCAD Professor Emeritus), Eric Fredricksen (City of Vancouver Public Art Manager)

Topic: Public Art

Event Description: Dr. Angela Clarke will introduce the genesis of the sculpture panel in response to the issues she has encountered celebrating the legacy of the artist Charles Marega (1871-1939) whose work has problematic elements. For example, Marega’s lions are colonial symbols, and his bust of Mussolini embodies fascism, violence and the atrocities of World War II. Angela will pose the question: what is the current role of public sculpture?
