Opening event begins at 7pm at the Italian Cultural Centre Gallery
Mary- Beth Laviolette, Guest Curator with Angela Clarke (Curator Italian Cultural Centre Gallery) and Raine Mckay (Craft Council)
Beginning on September 10 the Italian Cultural Centre in partnership with the Craft Council features an exhibition which celebrates contemporary Craft in BC. The work of 23 BC artists are featured including 7 invited First Nations Artists
This exhibition seeks to reappraise the word craft. Craft frequently is viewed as a creative medium which is based more on tradition rather than originality of technique or artistic achievement. However, this exhibition focuses on the transference of knowledge which characterizes craft education. Structurally, craft practice references community traditions and history, placing it in opposition to Fine Art which values individualism. This exhibition focus on craft is a powerful cultural force enabling cultural survival, the preservation of community and tradition.
