Youth Volunteer Award

We all know how important the youth is to our society. The young people are our future. At the Italian Cultural Centre we need dynamic young members to carry on our traditions and to bring innovation to our Centre.

The Birth of the Youth Volunteer Award

During a visit to Villa Carital in 2008, a young girl captured the attention of Carla Finamore while she and Joe (President of the Italian Cultural Cente Society) were visiting with the residents.  With an incredible smile and gentle caring presence, this young girl was observed actively assisting the nurses with all sorts of activities.  Upon speaking with the nurses, an incredible and inspiring story was uncovered and it is in this spirit that the Youth Volunteer Award was created.
That young girl’s name was Lexus Serraglio Garcea and she was only 9 years old.  She had been visiting her nonna every week at Villa Carital for two years. Her cheerful demeanour and sweet smile brightened the day of all the residents with whom she also spent some time chatting and visiting. After her nonna passed away, Lexus still wanted to continue her visits with the other residents at Villa Carital. She is certainly an admirable example for her peers and a most worthy recipient of the first Youth Volunteer award for exemplifying outstanding qualities in youth for the betterment of the Italian Canadian community.
